Η μικρή γοργόνα και η Carlsberg... | The Little Mermaid and Carlsberg beer...

The Little Mermaid...

[ENG] Did you know that the famous statue "Den lille havfrue" (The little Mermaid) in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, was sponsored by Carl Jacobsen, son of Jacob Christian Jacobsen, founder of the Danish brewery Carlsberg? I didn't know that... Carl Jacobsen was fascinated by a ballet about the well known Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale in Copenhagen’s Royal Theater and asked the primaballerina, Ellen Price, to model for the statue. Probably he was impressed by her as well... Sculptor was the Danish-Icelandic Edvard Eriksen. The ballerina agreed to lend her head for the mermaid but she did not accept to pose naked, so the sculptor used as model, for the body of the mermaid, his wife Eline Eriksen. The statue, however, is actually a copy of the real one, which the heirs of the sculptor keep at an undisclosed location...
