The Great Basilica

The Great Basilica

[ENG] The Great Basilica Complex is an important monument of the medieval Bulgarian culture from the Christian period (second half of 9th century - the middle of 11th century). The so called Great Basilica, the Archbishop's residency, the First Bulgarian Monastery were located on an area of more than 20 decares, surrounded and protected by a stone crenelated wall nearly 4 meters high.
An early Christian complex - Martyry, composed by a cross-like temple and a well - holy spring - existed there before the erecting of the Basilica. The Martyry was destroyed during the unsuccessful uprising of the Pagan disciples (865). The ruling Prince Boris Mikhail became a founder of a new temple erected at the place of the Martyry. This was in a token of the victory of the Christianity in Bulgaria. The Great Basilica (1) was completed circa the year 875. It could be rated amongst the greatest cathedrals in early medieval Europe due to its impressive size (99X30 meters) and complex structure. It executed the functions of a Cathedral, King's, Archbishop's and Monastery church and was a center of the spiritual and religious life of the capital Pliska and early medieval Bulgaria at the same time for about 250 years. The Archbishop's residency (2) was situated in the yards northwards and southwards of the temple. A Residential Palace, and to the west of it a bath with hypocaust were investigated in the northern yard. A three part building with a didascaleonum (a school) and a scriptorium (3) was investigated to the south of the Basilica. Probably the disciples of Cyril and Methodius who founded Pliska (later Preslav) Literary School of the Slav language worked there. The ruling Prince Boric-Mikhail received them in the year 886. The monastery premises (5) were located in the yard to the north of the residency. The kitchen and the dining room were situated in the central part. A two store building with 10 similar premises - the cells where the monks lived, was located in the eastern part of the yards. The large monastery well was in the middle of the yards and next to it - the second bath equipped with hypocaust and cross dome structure. A necropolis with the graves of the members of the confraternity was investigated in the yard to the southwest of the Basilica. A public necropolis (4) with graves of aristocrats was investigated in front of the apses of the Basilica.

Boyar's House

[ENG] Photo 1: The Boyar's house is a vast rectangular building (16X12 meters) that was erected in the first half of the 9th century. The solid bases indicate that there was a second floor. According to its layout, construction and rich interior - Marble chapiters and columns were found during the excavations - the building was similar to the Residential Palaces of the Citadel. It had the same bath building as the above mentioned ones. Its ruins were found 15 meters northwards of the entrance of the Boyar's house beneath the walls of the later chain building. The complex of a residential palace with a bath situated at 30 meters from the citadel suggests that a leader related to the ruler lived in the Boyar's house. A large complex of chain buildings was erected to the north of the Boyar's house in the end of the capital period and in 10th century. Their entrances were to the west and a stone wall separated them from the street connecting the Citadel and the northern gate of the stone fortress.

The Citadel of Pliska

Citadel - The Main Entrance

[ENG] Pliska's Citadel was the fortified residential Palace of the Bulgarian Ruler and his family. It represented a complex of residential, farm and religious buildings that were built and existed in different times. A brick wall on a stone base surrounded it and this was the inner belt of the defensive system of Pliska. The walled area was about 10 decares. The eastern part of the complex was not built-up when Pliska was the capital. The southern entrance was the main one. It was formed as a gate with a square tower. There are three arched passages of the underground tunnels leading southwards and northwards, outside the fortress in the brick wall. [Info from the sign in the Citadel]

[ENG] At the west of the palace there was the Palace Basilica. By an ancient tradition, the cult buildings served various religions. The so-called "Large Heathen Temple" (1 at the drawing of the Basilica) in Pliska was reconstructed as a church after the converting to Christianity too. It is of a Basilica type with three part altar and premises for the ruling prince and the bishop (2). Later the Palace Basilica was enlarged - three spacious apses and a marble altar barrier with rich plastic decoration (3) were formed. It was the only cathedral in Pliska - King's and Bishop's church.
