Μήνυμα σε μπουκάλι | Message in a bottle

Mother, daughter, grandaughter

[ENG] In the virtual world we live in, everything we upload is like throwing a bottle with a message in the ocean... We do not know who will find it and read it, or what it will bring us back... This is how I felt a few days ago... Exactly two years ago, on 8th of March, the International Woman's Day, I uploaded some photos from a complex of sculptures that is located near the Monument of the Soviet Army in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Among the photos there was one of a sculpture that depicts three generations of women: The mother - an old woman, her daughter - a fighter, and the little granddaughter... A few days ago, a Serb named Miloš, who saw the photo, wrote to me, "I wonder if the woman on the monument is Olga Petrov, Ex-Yugoslavian national hero". He even sent me a link to Wikipedia about that woman. I do not know if the sculptor had indeed Olga Petrov in his mind when he created this sculpture, but surely the resemblance is amazing!!

[ENG] The "Monument of the Mother" is a sculpture that exists on the tomb of the Bulgarian poet Dimcho Debelyanov, who was killed on 02.10.1916, at the Battle of Karadjovo (today Monoklisia of Serres) during the First World War, when he was only 29 years old. Originally he was buried at Sidirokastro of Serres, Greece. In 1931, his remains were carried in his native town, Koprivshtitsa, today in Bulgaria. The sculpture of the "mother" was placed on the grave in 1934. The sculptor, Ivan Lazarov, in one of his visit in the village he saw an old woman, Lila Paraleeva, who had lost her husband and son in the war, sitting on the threshold of her house. This gave him the idea for the monument. As Lila Paraleeva died shortly thereafter, the sculptor used as a model another grandmother of the village, Lala Dushkova.

Το συντριβάνι της Γκεφιόν | Gefionspringvandet

Gefionspringvandet

Gefionspringvandet

Gefionspringvandet

[ENG] The Gefionspringvandet (the fountain of Gefjon) is the most impressive sculpture in Copenhagen, even though it is less known internationally than the "Little Mermaid". The sculpture depicts an old Danish legend associated with the creation of the island Sjælland (Zealand), the island where the capital of Denmark is located. According to this legend, the god Odin was living in a small island (for some he was living in the island Fyn where the city Odense is today). One day he asked goddess Gefjon to find more land. The goddess went to the area where today is Sweden. There, king Gylfi, the oldest known Scandinavian king, promised to give to her as much land as she could plough in one night... She then went to Jötunheimr, the homeland of the giants. There she breaded four children with a giant, and transformed them into four strong oxen... All land that was ploughed that night was thrown in the sea between the island of Fyn and Sweden and Sjælland was created. The gap that was left in Sweden it was filled with water and became the Lake Vänern (Normally, the legend says that the lake was Mälaren, but the similarity of Vänern in shape and size to Sjælland has made many people to believe that Lake Vänern is actually the lake of legend). The fountain was sponsored by Carlsberg Foundation for the 50 years (1847-1897) of the establishment of the brewery... The construction, however, was completed in 1908, after many disagreements about what should be its subject... Designer of the fountain was Anders Bundgaard, who was also the sculptor of the figures (1897-99). The inauguration of the fountain was made on July 14, 1908. It was renovated in 1999. Later, it was out of commission for many years, and was re-inaugurated in September 2004.

Μιχαήλ ο Γενναίος | Mihai Viteazul

Mihai Viteazul

Mihai Viteazul

Mihai Viteazul

Wallachian coat of Arms

[ENG] Mihai Bravu or more often Mihai Viteazul (both mean "Mihail the Brave") is the greatest national hero of Romania. He was Born in 1558 and he was assassinated in 1601. He was the son of Ratrascu cel Bun and Theodora Cantacuzino. His mother's family had common roots with the Byzantine Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos. Michael the brave succeeded to unite under him the Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia, that is the current Romania and Moldova... The union lasted a little less than 6 months but ιτ became a point of reference for nationalists, as well as a catalyst for various Romanian forces to achieve a single Romanian state. Michael the Brave managed, also, to win the Ottoman army in a series of battles, one of the most important of which is the one that took place at village Călugăreni, on 23.08.1595. In this battle, Michael, with an army of 16,000 men, faced the forefront of the Ottoman army, which was estimated to be around 70,000 to 120,000 men. The battle ended with a loss of 1,000 men from the side of Michael and about 10,000 to 15,000 from the side of the Ottomans. Michael was assassinated on 09.08.1601. The assassination was organized by his ally, Austrian General of Albanian origin, Giorgio Basta, who wanted to have the control of Transylvania... The assassination took place just a few days after their joint victory against the Hungarian army at Gurăslău. It must be noted that, during the brief period of control of Giorgio Basta, Transylvania lost a third of its population, including most of the nobility. Michael the Brave is known also from a series of strict laws that he set, such as that a man has the right to deprive the food from his wife if she is not practicing her "marital duties". Note: The photographs are taken at the Romanian village Călugăreni, where the historical battle took place... Sculptor was Anton Barbu Panaghia (1995).

| Lekande barn

Lekande barn

[ENG] "Lekande barn" ("Children playing") is the name of a fountain at Gustav Adolfs torg (Gustavus Adolphus Square) at the center of the Swedish town Malmö. The sculptor of the statue, which currently is in the center of a fountain, is Anders Jönsson (1883-1963). It was sculpted in 1913 and it was first exhibited in the Baltic Exhibition organized in 1914 by Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Russia in Malmo. The exhibition was launched on May 15, 1914 but it was interrupted by World War I, at which both Germany and Russia took part... The statue was purchased by art dealer, Eugén Wingård, for 11,000 crowns... He later, for the celebration of the 25 years of his business in town, donated the statue to the city, along with the money to build a fountain. The fountain was inaugurated in 1915. Originally, it was in a different position on the square but it was taken away when the tram's railways were placed there. The tram service was discontinued in 1973. The fountain was placed again, at a different position, in the '90s, when the square was reformed.

Diana (Nature's Guardian)

Diana (Nature's Guardian)

Diana (Nature's Guardian)

Optimistorkestern

| The Little Mermaid and Carlsberg beer...

The Little Mermaid...

[ENG] Did you know that the famous statue "Den lille havfrue" (The little Mermaid) in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, was sponsored by Carl Jacobsen, son of Jacob Christian Jacobsen, founder of the Danish brewery Carlsberg? I didn't know that... Carl Jacobsen was fascinated by a ballet about the well known Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale in Copenhagen’s Royal Theater and asked the primaballerina, Ellen Price, to model for the statue. Probably he was impressed by her as well... Sculptor was the Danish-Icelandic Edvard Eriksen. The ballerina agreed to lend her head for the mermaid but she did not accept to pose naked, so the sculptor used as model, for the body of the mermaid, his wife Eline Eriksen. The statue, however, is actually a copy of the real one, which the heirs of the sculptor keep at an undisclosed location...

Ιωάννης του Νεπομούκ | Jan Nepomucký

The martyrdom of St. John Nepomuceno

The martyrdom of St. John Nepomuceno

[ENG] Bishop Jan Nepomucký (John of Nepomuk) was found drowned in the waters of the river Vltava of Prague on March 20, 1393, during the reign of the German "King of the Romans" Václav IV (Wenceslaus). Wenceslaus was originally married to Johana Bavorská (Joanna of Bavaria) and when she died, in 1386, he married his cousin Žofie Bavorská (Sofia of Bavaria). As it was then common, the Queen's confessor was the bishop himself, who, in the case of Sophia, was John of Nepomuk... In 1393 the jealous Wenceslaus suspected that his wife was cheating on him... He demanded, therefore, from the bishop to reveal what his wife told him during the confession... John of Nepomuk did not want to betray the secrets of the confession and Wenceslaus tortured him until death... After, he threw the body of the bishop in the river Vltava of Prague. The Catholic Church named John of Nepomuk a Saint... He is the patron saint of Prague, and, probably because of how he died, patron saint against the floods... There are several stories relating to the torture Saint John Nepomuk suffered and for his death... According to one of them, the Saint, after being tortured by Wenceslaus, promised to the kinged to tell the secret to a living soul... The saint bent down and said the secret to the dog of King... According to another legend, after the death of the priest drought followed and the lever of the waters of the river fall a lot. Rays of light appeared above the water. People searched where exactly they saw the lights and they discovered the body of the priest. In Prague, a statue of the saint is on the Karlův most (Charles Bridge)... The tradition says that touching the saint in the pictures at the base of the statue brings to the person good luck... A Beautiful complex of St. John of Nepomuk exists on Ostrow Tumski (Island of the Cathedral), in the Polish city Wrocław.

Ηρακλής και Ανταίος | Hercules and Antaeus

Hercules kills Antaeus

[ENG] Antaeus, in Greek mythology, was a giant, son of Poseidon and Gaia, who was a king at the area of the ancient lake Tritonis, which, according to the ancient historians, was in Libya (modern historians believe, though, that the lake was in the area of modern Tunisia). He was extremely strong as long as he remained in contact with the ground (his mother earth), but once lifted into the air he became as weak as other men. Hercules, during one of his 12 labors, held Antaeus aloft and crushed him in a bear-hug.
