Ο Ναός του Αγίου Στεφάνου, Σαντορίνη | The church of St. Stephen, Santorini

Ο παλαιοχριστιανικός ναός του Αγίου Στεφάνου της Σαντορίνης βρίσκεται πάνω στο Μέσα Βουνό, στην είσοδο της Αρχαίας Θήρας... Ο Νάος έχει κτιστεί πάνω στα ερείπια πρωτοχριστιανικού ναού αφιερωμένου στον "Άγιο και φοβερό Αρχάγγελο Μιχαήλ", όπως αναφέρει σε επιστολή του, στον τότε Μητροπολίτη Δανιήλ, ο αρχαιολόγος Friedrich Freiherr Hiller von Gaertringen, ο οποίος το 1896 ξεκίνησε ανασκαφές στην Αρχαία Θήρα.


Πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι αυτό που σήμερα ονομάζουμε "Μέσα Βουνό", παλαιότερα λεγόταν "Βουνό του Αγίου Στεφάνου", εξαιτίας της ύπαρξης του ναού. "Μέσα Βουνό" λεγόταν τότε ο αυχένας που ένωνε το βουνό με το βουνό του Προφήτη Ηλία, ο οποίος αυχένας σήμερα ονομάζεται Σελλάδα, όπως ήταν η ονομασία του στα αρχαία χρόνια... Στην Σελλάδα βρισκόταν η νεκρόπολη της Αρχαίας Θήρας...

The temple was built on the ruins of an early Christian church dedicated to St. Archangel Michael. It should be noted that, what we now call "Mesa Vouno", was formerly called "Mountain of St. Stephen" due to the existence of the church. "Mesa Vouno" was called the "neck" that is connecting the mountain with the Mountain of Prophet Elias. This "neck" is now called "Sellada", as was the name in the ancient times... Sellada accommodated the necropolis (i.e. cemetery) of Ancient Thera.

Το τέμενος του Αρτεμίδωρου | Sanctuary of Artemidoros

Το τέμενος του Αρτεμίδωρου του Περγαίου, ναυάρχου του Πτολεμαϊκού στόλου, βρίσκεται στην Αρχαία Θήρα και είναι λαξευτό στους βράχους του Μέσα Βουνού. Ο Αρτεμίδωρος ίδρυσε το τέμενος στα τέλη του 4ου αιώνα, μετά από όνειρο που είδε.

Το κεφάλι του Αρτεμίδωρου, ιδρυτή του τεμένους, και ένα δελφίνι, σύμβολο του Ποσειδώνα.

Ένας αετός, σύμβολο του Δία, και ένα λιοντάρι, σύμβολο του Απόλλωνα...
