On Polish roads we have so many holes that sometimes I wonder if it would be easier if we went back to the pavement instead of asphalt ;p

In general, you are quite right. The thing is only that it has some disadvantages. It is far more costly and time consuming to lay down a stone path, so the governments prefer asphalt..
